Altai pony trekking

Discover on horseback one of the most remote area in the world, Mongol Altai. At the borders of Central Asia, Kazakh people live in harmony with their old customs. Peaks covered with snow, glaciers, clear lakes and lush valleys are on the program of this extraordinary adventure. A real caravan with pack camels will go with you in this ride throughout the Altai Tavan Bogd.

Day 1. Arrival at Ulan Bator and visit of the city

  • Arrival at the airport, meeting with our driver. Transfer to your hotel, settling in, and rest.
  • Appointment at 12 o'clock at your hotel with your guide. He will take you in the restaurant of your choice.
  • Let's immerse ourselves in the heart of the Mongolian history, in the wonderful National History Museum. Three floors of a rich, glorious, violent and noble past, from prehistory to Soviet period, including the creation of the great Mongolian Empire by Genghis Khan.
  • Walk in the centre of Ulan-Bator. Discovery of Gengis Khan Square and the House of Parliament.
  • At 18 o' clock, Mongolian traditional show at Tumen Ekh : folkloric dances, contortion, and of course khoomi, the overtone singing.

Day 2. Flight to Olgii and Western Mongolia

  • We embark on our flight to the Mongolian farwest. We fly over the central lakes and the Western mountains, and reach Olgii.
  • Olgii is the capital of the province of BayanOlgii, 1636 kilometres from Ulan Bator and 1710 metres above the sea level. It's principally inhabited by Kazakhs and its atmosphere is very influenced by Central Asia : many signs written in Arabic, mosques and their cupola pricking up towards the sky.
  • Visit of Olgii Museum that shows an exhibition about the fauna and flora of the area. We discover the Kazakh culture, notably with traditional costumes and with a Kazakh yurt built in the museum.
  • Night in a Kazakh yurts camp. Kazakh yurts are very different from the Mongolian ones : larger, more decorated, with hangings embroideres with bright colours placed all around the yurt, and also canopies and small curtains above the beds.

Day 3. Transfer to Altai Tavan Bogd Park

Olgii - Syrgaal area
  • We drive until the Sirgaal area. This very remote area, separated from China by high snowy summits, has the two beautiful lakes Khoton and Khurgan where the Khovd River has its source.
  • Meeting with a horses breeders family and horse assignment.

Day 4. Ride in the Sirgaal area

  • We'll start our pony trek throughout the Sirgaal area and will reah the first of the two lakes of Altai Tavan Bogd : Lake Khurgan. Possibilities to meet one of the Kazakh breeders families living there.

Day 5-6. Discovery of the Lakes Khurgan and Khoton

Day 5
  • Ride along Lake Khurgan to reach the second big mountain lake of this area : lake Khoton. At Southwest, the high summits of Altai surround us.
  • We ride on along Lake Khoton.

Day 7-8. Ride along Tahilbay Valley

Khoton lake - Tahilbai valley
  • During one day and a half, we will ride on the lush Tahilbai Valley to reach the green lake, small mountain lake with clear water, where the bravest of you can swim. You will see beautiful landscapes with lakes and forests of larches. This wild, remote area has may natural springs.

Day 9-10. Passing through the Altai Mounts

Tahilbai valley - Altai mountain pass
  • We ride across the mountains of Altai (we'll ride 36 kilomètres (22,37 miles) in total) . 3600 metres (2,24 miles) above the sea level, you will enjoy a stunning view on the wild landscapes of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. We settle our camp in the snowy sites nearby the pass.

Day 11. Petroglyphs of the white valley

Altai mountain pass - Shiveet Khairkhan
  • We ride over 16 kilometres (9,94 miles) along the Tsagaan Valley and ride down towards a small mountain lake at southeast of Shiveet Khairkhan Mount where we settle our camp. Shiveet Khairkhan is a sacred mountain for the Tuva living in the area.
  • Visit of the site of Tsagaan salaa. On 15 kilometres (9,32 miles), we can observe about 10000 rock paintings on the rocks that cover the southern bank of white river, "Tsagaan Gol".

Day 12. Track to Olgii

Shiveet Khairkhan - Olgii
  • With regret, we leave the breeders who escorted us during these eight wonderful riding days in postcard landscapes. We find the track again (harsh in this place) and drive back to the capital of province : Olgii.
  • We settle ourselves in a Kazakh yurts camp, where we'll enjoy a certain comfort.

Day 13. Return flight to Ulan Bator

Olgii - Ulan Bator
  • Arrival in town and transfer to your hotel where you can rest a few moments.
  • Rest of the day free. With our guide, you can go shopping in the centre of the city.

Day 14. Have a nice journey and see you soon !

  • Breakfast at the hotel. We go with you to the international airport of Ulan Bator. The transfer can be organized at the time you want, according to the schedule of your flight.
