The spirit of travel

Hooves thunder across the floor of the Orkhon valley as the Khangai mountains stand on the horizon. For five days, you ride through this UNESCO-listed land where nomadic families set up their summer camps, following a millennial rhythm punctuated by yak milking and cheese making.

From Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol empire, to the hot springs of Tsenkher, the route unveils the remains of the Erdene Zuu monastery surrounded by its 108 stupas, then rises towards Tovkhon where Zanabazar created the Soyombo alphabet. Between larch forests, steppes blooming with edelweiss and Orkhon waterfalls, each stage reveals the deep soul of this equestrian nation.

The legacy of Genghis Khan still resonates in these landscapes where Tibetan Buddhism and ancestral shamanism blend. This ride offers an authentic immersion within a people who perpetuate the art of nomadic living, between comfortable yurts and nights with local families, to the rhythm of Mongolian horses.

Parc national de Khustai•Guide francophoneGuide furgonCook - discovery tour

Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Every morning, monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere filled with serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and freely exchange with people present on the site.

Road heading towards Khustai Nuruu National Park, a vast protected territory famous for hosting the last Przewalski's horses, called locally Takhi. Successfully reintroduced into the Mongolian steppes, these wild horses now roam in complete freedom.

At the end of the day, when the light becomes softer and animals more active, a walk takes you to their usual watering point. You can then observe them discreetly in their natural environment, in the heart of the vast Mongolian spaces.

For those who wish, it is possible to take a first horseback ride in the surrounding area and peacefully enjoy the landscapes of the reserve.

In the old capital of Genghis Khan

Karakorum•Guide francophoneGuide furgonCook - discovery tour

Orkhon Valley → Kharkhorin

3h30130 km

You take the road to Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, recalling the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.

Visit to the Erdene zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.

Coude d'Üürt•Guide francophoneGuide furgonCook - discovery tour

We continue our ride across the verdant steppes of the Orkhon valley, the true territory of nomads. Throughout the day, herds of yaks, sheep, goats and horses roam freely around us, offering a vivid and authentic picture of rural Mongolie.

This immersion in the heart of the steppes holds many surprises for us, revealing a picturesque Mongolie where nature and traditions blend harmoniously.

Monastère de Tövkhön•Guide francophoneGuide furgonCook - discovery tour

From our campement at Uurt's bend, we embark on a day of horseback riding through mountains and forests, heading towards the Tövkhön monastery. It is here that Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the famous Soyombo alphabet, which has since become a national symbol.

Perched at 2,312 meters altitude, the monastery offers an exceptional panorama over the Khangaï range and the immense Orkhon valley that stretches as far as the eye can see. We take advantage of this remarkable setting to enjoy our picnic, facing one of the most beautiful landscapes of central Mongolia.

We then continue our ride to the gates of the Naiman Nuur national park. The path unfolds through steppes dotted with edelweiss, before skirting beautiful forests of pines and larches.

At the end of the day, we arrive at Boorgiin Oroi, where a family of yak herders welcomes us for the night. Their campement, set at the edge of a small forest, faces the mountains of Naiman Nuur park, offering a peaceful and unspoiled setting for this new immersion in nomadic life.
