The spirit of travel

Endless steppes stretch beneath an azure sky, dotted with the white yurts of Mongolian herders. On the horizon, the Khangai Mountains draw their forested ridges while to the south, the first dunes of the Gobi undulate in the wind. This grand three-week loop crosses the emblematic ecosystems of Mongolia, from the sacred lake Khövsgöl to the flaming cliffs of Bayanzag, passing through the historic valley of the Orkhon.

Each stage reveals a different face of the country: the extinct volcanoes of Uran Togoo, the hot springs of Tsenkher, the ancient capital of Genghis Khan at Karakorum. Seven nights with local families allow you to share the daily life of nomadic families, watch yak milking, participate in gathering herds on horseback and taste airag, fermented mare's milk. The monasteries of Amarbayasgalant and Erdene Zuu testify to the Buddhist spirituality that still permeates these lands.

This crossing respects the ancestral rhythm of the Mongolian nomads, a horseman people who shaped History since Genghis Khan. Between hiking on foot, horseback rides across the steppes and nights under the yurt, this journey offers a complete immersion in the Mongolian soul, where modernity has not yet erased the thousand-year-old traditions of nomadism.

In the morning, you visit the Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built nearly 300 years ago, the complex stands out for its highly coherent architecture: a predominantly Chinese style, enriched with Mongolian and Tibetan influences. The complex follows a symmetrical layout, with the main buildings aligned on a north-south axis and secondary structures distributed along parallel axes.

Today, you can admire 28 buildings there, including a two-story temple of 32 m², still open for worship

Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.

Visit to the Erdene zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. On the road to a legendary desert!

Monastère d'Ongi•Guide furgonGuide francophoneCook

A transition day between two ecosystems: you leave the green mountains of Khangai to head towards the Gobi.

You arrive in the sum of Saikhan Ovoo. These medium-altitude mountains, located along the Ongii river west of Saikhan Ovoo, offer a welcome break between northwest Mongolia and the Gobi desert. The river's meanders shelter the remains of two monasteries: the Barlim monastery on the north bank and that of Khutagt on the south bank.

Discovery of the site, known as the Ongii Monastery, as well as the associated small museum. The dwellings and monasteries, once occupied by nearly a thousand monks, were almost entirely destroyed in 1937. Since 2002, a few religious figures have returned and have undertaken the reconstruction of the temples with modest means but profound devotion.

Visit to the Bayanzag cliffs, known as the "flaming cliffs" because of their ochre and red hues, and famous for the "dinosaur graveyard". Surrounded by saxaul forests, they bear witness to an era when dinosaurs still roamed the region. It was here that paleontologist Roy Andrews Chapman discovered, in 1922, the first dinosaur bones and eggs ever unearthed, now visible at the Natural History Museum in Ulaanbaatar and in several museums around the world.

Arrival in the Khongor Dunes

Dunes de khongor•Guide furgonGuide francophoneCook

Early start to reach the western part of the Three Beautiful Park and reach the Khongor sand dunes, "light bay sand", which extend in a long belt at the foot of the mountains.

Visit of the Khongor dunes. This long expanse of sand, which stretches for nearly 180 km long and 20 km wide, features dunes of approximately 80 meters in height, the highest reaching 120 meters. From their summit, the view opens onto the vastness of the desert, while the movement of the sand produces a natural humming sound, at the origin of the name of "singing dunes". Beyond the golden crests, the steppe stretches as far as the eye can see.

You set off on a camel ride in the heart of the Gobi Desert. At the leisurely pace of this emblematic animal, you progress along the dunes and the Khongor River, "Clear Bay", which alternates between surface and underground.

On foot, you climb one of the dunes to enjoy a wide panorama of the desert. From the summit, the silhouettes of the Three Beauties stand out on the horizon and, with a bit of luck, you will hear the singing dunes.

You stay with a Bactrian camel herder who welcomes you for the night. This is an opportunity to discover their way of life and appreciate simple and warm hospitality in the heart of the desert.

Hiking in the Yoliin Am canyon, the canyon of bearded vultures. You walk along the bottom of the canyon, covered with an almost permanent layer of ice. The place is so enclosed that the sun's rays only manage to melt the ice from August onwards, while it invades the canyon for the rest of the year.

After this first hike, you head to the "Mukhart Shivert" canyon. Smaller than Yoliin Am and ending in a dead-end, it remains very impressive: you progress along a large trench surrounded by high vertical walls, with a floor covered in smooth and shiny blue ice (outside the height of summer). At the end of the dead-end is a frozen waterfall most of the time. The round trip takes about an hour.
