The spirit of travel
Infinite steppes stretch beneath an azure sky, dotted with the white yurts of Mongolian herders. On the horizon, the Khangai mountains draw their forested ridges while to the south, the first dunes of the Gobi undulate in the wind. This great three-week loop crosses the emblematic ecosystems of Mongolia, from the sacred lake Khövsgöl to the flaming cliffs of Bayanzag, passing through the historic valley of the Orkhon.
Each stage reveals a different face of the country: the extinct volcanoes of Uran Togoo, the hot springs of Tsenkher, the ancient capital of Genghis Khan at Karakorum. Seven nights with local families allow you to share the daily life of nomadic families, witness the milking of yaks, participate in the gathering of herds on horseback and taste airag, fermented mare's milk. The monasteries of Amarbayasgalant and Erdene Zuu testify to the Buddhist spirituality that still permeates these lands.
This crossing respects the ancestral rhythm of the Mongolian nomads, a horse-riding people who shaped History since Genghis Khan. Between hiking, riding in the steppes and nights under the yurt, this journey offers complete immersion in the Mongolian soul, where modernity has not yet erased the millennia-old traditions of nomadism.
The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Welcome and discoveries in Ulaanbaatar
Arrival in Ulan Bator, the Mongolian capital, where vast steppes gradually give way to an astonishing city, blending Soviet heritage, nomadic traditions and emerging modernity. Welcome by your driver and transfer to the city center, your first glimpse of this fascinating destination with already striking landscapes. Check-in at your hotel and rest (early check-in not included).
Meet at noon at your hotel, where your guide will greet you before accompanying you to a local restaurant for lunch. This first moment of exchange is an opportunity to get to know each other, discover the highlights of your adventure and slowly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Mongolia.
Immerse yourself in Mongolian history with a visit to the National History Museum. Spread over several floors, the museum traces the rich past of the country, from the first nomadic civilizations to the Soviet period, including the rise of the great empire founded by Genghis Khan. A fascinating visit to better understand the identity and culture of Mongolia.
Walk through downtown Ulaanbaatar discovering the famous Sukhbaatar Square, the heart of the capital dominated by the imposing statue of Genghis Khan. You will also observe the Mongolian Parliament and the vibrant atmosphere of this astonishing city, between Soviet heritage and nomadic culture.
Around 6:00 PM, you attend a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh, famous for its performances combining folk dances, traditional music, contortion acts and khoomei, the fascinating Mongolian throat singing inscribed on the intangible cultural heritage.

Departure for Amarbayasgalant Monastery
Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Every morning, the monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere filled with serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and to freely exchange with people present on the site.
You head towards Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built in the 18th century in memory of the first Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar, then at the head of Mongolian religion, it is considered one of the major monasteries in the country. Located in the north of Selenge province, it benefits from a particularly remarkable setting.

On the way to the extinct volcanoes natural park
In the morning, you visit the Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built nearly 300 years ago, this complex stands out for its very coherent architecture: a predominantly Chinese style, enriched with Mongolian and Tibetan influences. The complex follows a symmetrical plan, with main buildings aligned on a north-south axis and secondary structures distributed along parallel axes.
Today, you can admire 28 buildings there, including a two-story temple of 32 m², still open for worship
You cross the wheat fields and large agricultural areas before arriving at Erdenet. This city is among the country's main economic centers and is home to a vast open-pit copper mine.
Erdenet → Parc national d'Uran Togoo
You head towards the natural park of the volcanoes of Uran Togoo. Uran Uul, an ancient volcano active 20 to 25 million years ago, today welcomes varied fauna and flora. The old lava flows have made the soils particularly fertile, offering a rich and pleasant environment to explore.

Arrival on the shores of Lake Khuvsgul
Parc national d'Uran Togoo → Murun
You set off on a hike on the heights of Uran Uul to enjoy panoramic views of this volcanic region. The trail crosses through woodland, among Siberian larches, before reaching the crater. Along the way, you observe a great variety of plants as well as numerous birds and insects. At the bottom of the crater lies a small lake surrounded by dense vegetation.
Arrival at Lake Khövsgöl, one of the world's natural wonders. Imagine 2760 km2 of a mountain lake, with water so pure you can drink it, and surrounded by a dozen peaks reaching over 2000 meters in altitude and covered with pine forests and lush meadows where yaks and horses graze!
You head east, towards the verdant valleys of Alag Sar, where you settle into a small ger camp located on the shores of the lake.

Hiking on the shores of Mongolia's great blue lake
Accompanied by local herders and their yaks, you set off for a day of hiking or horseback riding in the wooded valleys of Alag Tsar. At the leisurely pace of the cart, you discover a land deeply connected to nomadism. In summer, the region is covered with flowers and it is not uncommon to walk through a carpet of edelweiss. To the west, on the opposite shore, peaks exceeding 3,000 meters are reflected in the clear waters of the lake.
In the evening, you set up the yurt with the herders, the one you transported during the day, and under which you will spend the night.

On the way to the central steppes
You visit the site of the reindeer stelae of Uushigiin Övör, a remarkable megalithic ensemble adorned with stones engraved with animal motifs.
You stop in Mörön to buy fresh food provisions at the market, then have lunch in town before resuming your journey.
You take the road towards the center of the country: the track crosses several passes and descends into isolated valleys where landscapes change rapidly. The altitude exceeds 2,000 meters at the passes.
As you progress, the panoramas gain in diversity, inviting you to make multiple stops to enjoy the views and take some photos.

Lakes and volcanoes region
Shine Ider → Parc national de Terkhiin Tsagaan
You head towards the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur natural park located at 2,060 meters altitude. This lake, nicknamed "the great white lake", forms with the volcanic zone surrounding it an emblematic site of the Arkhangai province.
You spend the night with a nomadic family, in the mountainous part of the park.

Hiking on Khorgo Volcano
From Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur
You set off on a hike along the shores of the lake, heading South-East towards the Khorgo volcano, which reaches an altitude of 2,240 meters. You climb it, a progressive and accessible ascent. From the summit, the view unfolds over the lake and the surrounding hills.
Near the volcano, the lava flows shape a unique landscape, contrasting with the environments encountered so far.

Relaxation at Tsenkher Hot Springs
Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur → Tsetserleg
You continue your journey through the heart of Arkhangai and discover vast steppes where many herding families live and where yaks and other herds graze. You stop at Tsetserleg, a small town set in a landscape of mountains covered with larches.
On site, you resupply at the local market before visiting the Zayan Gegeen museum.
Tsetserleg → Sources chaudes de Tsenkher
You arrive at the Tsenkher hot springs, where you can relax in the hot water baths at the camp.

Nomadic life in the Orkhon Valley
Sources chaudes de Tsenkher → Monastère de Tövkhön
You leave the road to take the trails and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the verdant steppe where herds of nomadic families roam. You are then welcomed by a family of herders in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Orkhon Valley → Тovkhon
On the way, excursion to the Tövkhön monastery. The ascent to the summit of Öndör Ulaan hill, accessible only on foot, leads to the Tovkhon hermitage, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. Located at 2,312 m altitude, the site offers a vast panorama over the Khangai range. You enjoy a picnic in this exceptional setting, with the Orkhon valley below.
Return to your hosts' place then a stroll around the camp surroundings.
2-night stay with a nomadic herding family. You will discover the nomadic way of life and share their daily routine in all its simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in milking animals, making traditional dairy products or herding livestock on horseback.
(Activities subject to seasonality)

Orkhon Waterfall Visit
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades
You set off for a walk along the Orkhon valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls. This hike allows you to move at the pace of the steppe and fully appreciate the open landscapes that line the river.
Visit to Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where clear water cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing 16 meters high, they formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the end of the day, you attend the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.

In the old capital of Genghis Khan
Orkhon Valley → Kharkhorin
You take the road to Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.
Visit to the Erdene zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.
Around 3:00 PM, you attend an introduction to Mongolian calligraphy, then you practice this art form by creating your own masterpiece.

On the way to a legendary desert!
A transition day between two ecosystems: you leave the green mountains of Khangai to head towards the Gobi.
You arrive in the sum of Saikhan Ovoo. These medium-altitude mountains, located along the Ongii River west of Saikhan Ovoo, offer a welcome break between northwestern Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. The meanders of the river shelter the remains of two monasteries: the Barlim monastery on the north bank and that of Khutagt on the south bank.
Discovery of the site, known as the Ongii lamasery, as well as the associated small museum. The dwellings and monasteries, once occupied by nearly a thousand monks, were almost entirely destroyed in 1937. Since 2002, a few religious figures have returned and undertaken the reconstruction of the temples with modest means but deep devotion.

Flaming Cliffs and Dinosaurs
Last day on the trail before reaching the gates of the Grand Gobi and its "Three Beauties", the three highest peaks in this section of the Gobi-Altai range: Baruun Saihan, the Western Beauty; Dund Saihan, the Central Beauty; and Züün Saihan, the Eastern Beauty, which reaches 2,846 meters.
Visit to the Bayanzag cliffs, known as the "flaming cliffs" due to their ochre and red hues, and famous for the "dinosaur cemetery". Surrounded by saxaul forests, they bear witness to a time when dinosaurs still roamed the region. It was here that paleontologist Roy Andrews Chapman discovered, in 1922, the first dinosaur bones and eggs ever unearthed, now visible in the natural history museum in Ulan Bator and in several museums around the world.

Arrival in the Khongor Dunes
Early morning departure to reach the western part of the Three Beauties Park and discover the Khongor sand dunes, "light bay sand", which stretch in a long belt at the foot of the mountains.
Visit to the Khongor dunes. This vast expanse of sand, stretching for nearly 180 km long and 20 km wide, features dunes approximately 80 meters high, with the highest reaching 120 meters. From their summit, the view opens onto the immensity of the desert, while the movement of sand produces a natural humming sound, at the origin of the name "singing dunes". Beyond the golden crests, the steppe stretches as far as the eye can see.
You set off for a camel trek in the heart of the Gobi Desert. At the leisurely pace of this emblematic animal, you progress along the dunes and the Khongor River, "Clear Bay", which alternates between surface and underground.
On foot, you climb one of the dunes to enjoy a wide panorama of the desert. From the summit, the silhouettes of the Three Beauties stand out on the horizon and, with a bit of luck, you will hear the singing dunes.
You stay with a Bactrian camel herder, who welcomes you for the night. This is an opportunity to discover their way of life and enjoy simple and warm hospitality in the heart of the desert.

Hiking in the Canyons
Khongor els → Yolii am
You take the trail heading East from the "Three Beauties" to reach the canyon region.
Hiking in the Yoliin am canyon, the canyon of bearded vultures. You walk through the bottom of the canyon, covered with an almost permanent blanket of ice. The place is so narrow that the sun's rays only manage to melt the ice from August onwards, while it invades the canyon for the rest of the year.
After this first hike, you head to the "Mukhart Shivert" canyon. Smaller than Yoliin Am and ending in a dead end, it remains very impressive: you progress along a large trench surrounded by high vertical walls, with a floor covered with smooth and shiny blue ice (outside the height of summer). At the end of the dead end is a waterfall frozen most of the time. The round trip takes approximately one hour.

Granite Mountains of Baga Gazriin Chuluu
Yolii am → Baga gazriin chuluu
You travel through one of the emptiest regions of Mongolie. Between rocky desert and semi-arid steppes, you reach the Baga gazariin chuluu rocky formation mountains, where imposing granite formations shaped by the often harsh elements of this area appear.
In the 19th century, two venerated monks lived here, and their inscriptions carved into the rock are still visible. According to legend, Genghis Khan stayed in this pleasant region for walking.

Return to Ulaanbaatar and free time
Baga gazriin chuluu → Oulan Bator
Return to Ulan Bator. The last herds of wild horses sometimes cross the road before your eyes, while the last smoking yurts in the distance remind you of the steppe right up to the city gates. You then arrive in the city center and settle into your hotel, where you can rest for as long as needed.
Rest of the day free. Accompanied by your guide, you browse the city's shops to make your last purchases.

Good to have you back and see you next time!
