How to choose your circuit in Mongolia?
The choice depends first on available time and the distances you're comfortable covering by 4x4 on tracks. For a first discovery, a circuit of 13 to 17 days ideally combines Ulan Bator, the Orkhon Valley and central Gobi, around 1,800 km of tracks. To include Lake Khövsgöl in the north or the Altai in the west, plan for 18 days or more with one or two domestic flights to save time. Beyond three weeks, it becomes possible to cross the country from east to west, or to add a loop in the wild east towards Dadal, the presumed birthplace of Genghis Khan.
Different types of circuits
Our offer is built around three main families. Cultural circuits highlight monasteries (Erdene Zuu, Amarbayasgalant), the archaeological sites of Karakorum, and encounters with herding families. Adventure itineraries include multi-day horseback treks in the Orkhon, hiking treks in Tavan Bogd park at the foot of the Altai glaciers, or expeditions with the Tsaatan reindeer herders. Family trips favour short stages, comfortable yurt camps, swimming in Khövsgöl and camel rides in the Gobi.
What is the best season?
High season runs from mid-June to mid-September. July brings the Naadam festival (11-12 July) and mild temperatures (20-25°C on the steppe), but also intense heat in the Gobi (35-40°C). August remains ideal for combining all regions. September offers autumn colours on the Khövsgöl forests with far fewer visitors, though nights are already cool at altitude. Early October marks the Golden Eagle festival in Ölgii in the Kazakh Altai, an experience in itself. Winter (-30 to -40°C) remains possible for specialised trips on the ice of Khövsgöl.
