The Yak Festival is one of Mongolia's most important festivals. Held annually over a single day on July 23rd, it takes place in the Orkhon Valley in Bat Ölzii sum, Övörkhangai province, near the Orkhon Falls.

In Mongolie, the yak is an animal of immense value to nomadic herders. Indeed, its uses are manifold and it is indispensable to the smooth running of a pastoral operation. The yak serves to transport materials via carts it pulls, or on its back. Its wool is used for clothing creation and, like any animal, its meat and milk provide sustenance. The Yak Festival is an event that honours this wild animal domesticated by humankind.

Throughout this day, everything revolves around the animal. The program features: rodeos, milking competitions, beauty contests, yak polo, and above all mounted racing! This local celebration draws large crowds as it is entertaining and full of surprises! For the occasion, Mongols don their finest traditional clothing to participate in or witness the various games and competitions.
