The Dunes of Mongol Els

·

North of the Gobi-Altai, the Mongol Els dunes unfold 330 km of golden sand along the Zavkhan River. A seldom-visited desert, homeland of nomadic herders.

The Mongol Els dunes lie north of the Gobi-Altai, stretching from Zavkhan province to the east, all the way to Khovd province at the far western edge. They extend across roughly 330 km throughout the Zavkhan River basin, reaching up toward its source.

From their summits, they offer a remarkable vista over Lake Ereen Nuur, a body of water that is more or less marshy and can be hazardous to approach.

In the westernmost dunes, situated in the Zavkhan River basin within Gobi-Altai province, folk medicine employs sand baths for therapeutic purposes.
