The spirit of travel

This 10-day circuit crosses several distinct regions of Mongolie, from the capital Oulan-Bator to the Orkhon valleys and the lake plateaus of Naiman Nuur, passing through the semi-desert areas of Khögnö Khan.

The departure takes place in Oulan-Bator with a visit to the National Museum of History and a show of traditional music and dance. The circuit continues to Khustai National Park, where Przewalski's horses live, then to Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol empire, and the Erdene Zuu monastery in Kharkhorin.

The central part of the stay is devoted to the Orkhon valley: two nights with local families allow visitors to share the daily life of nomadic families, with a visit to the Orkhon waterfalls. The circuit then heads up to the Naiman Nuur region, a highland area comprising eight volcanic lakes, with a hiking trip to Shireet Lake.

The return to Oulan-Bator is via Khögnö Khan and its semi-desert area, with a visit to the Erdene Khambiin monastery, then a stop at Elsen Tasarkhai for a camel ride on the dunes.

Accommodation alternates between hotels in Oulan-Bator, nights with local families in yurts and tourist camps, reflecting the diversity of lifestyles encountered throughout the journey.

Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Each morning, monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere filled with serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and freely exchange with people present on the site.

Road heading towards the Khustai Nuruu National Park, a vast protected territory famous for being home to the last Przewalski's horses, called Takhi locally. Successfully reintroduced into the Mongolian steppes, these wild horses now evolve in complete freedom.

At the end of the day, when the light becomes softer and the animals more active, a walk takes you to their usual watering point. You will then be able to observe them discreetly in their natural environment, in the heart of the vast Mongolian spaces.

In the old capital of Genghis Khan

Karakorum•DriverGuide francophoneGuide furgon

Orkhon Valley → Kharkhorin

3h30130 km

You take the road to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.

Visit to the Erdene Zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.

Stay with the nomads of the Orkhon

Vallée de l'Orkhon•DriverGuide francophoneGuide furgon

You leave the road to join the tracks and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the verdant steppe where herds of nomadic families roam. You are then welcomed by a herding family in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the way, you make a stop for an excursion to the Tövkhön monastery. The ascent of the summit of the Öndör Ulaan hill, accessible only on foot, leads to the Tovkhon hermitage, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. Located at 2,312 m altitude, the site reveals a vast panorama over the Khangaï range. You enjoy a picnic in this exceptional setting, with the Orkhon valley below.

2-night stay with a nomadic herding family. You will discover the nomadic way of life and share their daily routine in complete simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in animal milking, traditional dairy product making or even herding livestock.

Visit to the Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where a clear stream cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Rising 16 meters high, they formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

At the end of the day, you will attend the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue (Khorkhog), then share this traditional meal in the company of your hosts in a warm atmosphere.

Discovering the High-Altitude Region of the 8 Lakes

Orkhon Valley → Naiman nuur

5h180 km

You are progressing towards the Khangaï mountains, where the trail becomes more demanding due to a pass culminating at 2,800 meters. As you climb, the landscapes become more dramatic until you reach the very remote Naiman nuur national park, "eight lakes", a highland territory composed of larch forests and lakes nestled between the reliefs.

This elevated region remains cool for much of the year: it is not uncommon for snow to fall there still in June, or from mid-August onwards.
