The spirit of travel

At dawn, in front of the smoking yurts in the Orkhon Valley, horses graze freely while the guttural singing of herders echoes in the distance. This Mongolia, the one of infinite spaces and endless horizons, welcomes you for fourteen days of total immersion in a country where time seems suspended.

From the capital Ulan Bator to the granite formations of Baga Gazriin Chuluu, passing through the ochre cliffs of Bayanzag and the golden dunes of Khongor, the route unveils the striking diversity of Mongolian landscapes. In the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you share the daily life of nomadic families, participate in morning milking and discover the secrets of traditional dairy product manufacturing. On horseback or camelback, you progress at the ancestral pace of caravans.

This land saw the birth of the empire of Genghis Khan, whose remnants still remain at Karakorum. Buddhist monasteries, nestled in the mountains of Khangai or perched on rocky summits, testify to a profound spirituality that still permeates daily life. Between verdant steppes and the mineral immensity of the Gobi, this circuit reveals the soul of a country where modernity has not erased the simple beauty of nomadism.

Observation of Przewalski's Horses

Parc national de Khustai•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Every morning, monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere filled with serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and freely exchange with people present at the site.

Route en direction du Khustai nuruu national park, vaste territory protected famous for hosting the last Przewalski's horse, called locally Takhi. Successfully reintroduced into the Mongolian steppes, these wild horses evolve today in total freedom.

At the end of the day, when the light becomes softer and the animals more active, a walk leads you to their usual watering point. You will then be able to observe them discreetly in their natural environment, in the heart of the vast Mongolian spaces.

For those who wish, it is possible to take a first horse ride in the surrounding area and quietly enjoy the landscapes of the reserve.

Discovery of the mini-Gobi

Khögnö Khan•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Khustai → Khögnö Khan

3h180 km

Departure for the splendid rock formations of Khögnö Khan. You discover a park with varied landscapes, between semi-desert steppes, taiga zones, granite massifs and a long strip of sand approximately 80 km, which earned it the nickname of "mini Gobi".

Stroll along the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai where we discover the arid landscapes of the Bayan desert.

Then, you head off on a hike to the Khambiin Khiid Monastery. Perched in the mountains, this 17th-century monastery was built by Zanabazar as a tribute to his spiritual master, the monk Erdene. The peaceful atmosphere that pervades it and the view over the surroundings make it a striking cultural and spiritual stop.

Visit of the Old Capital and Nomadic Lands

Vallée de l'Orkhon•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Khogno Khan → Karakorum

1h30110 km

Route for Kharkhorin , the ancient capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital subsist, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.

Visit to the Erdene Zuu Monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum Museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.

Kharkhorin → Orkhon Valley

3h30130 km

You leave the road to join the tracks and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the green steppe where nomadic families' herds roam. You are then welcomed by a family of herders in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3-night stay with a nomadic herding family. You will discover the nomadic way of life and share their daily routine in complete simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in animal milking, traditional dairy product making or even herding livestock on horseback.

3h8 km

In the morning, you will embark on an excursion to the Tövkhön monastery. The ascent to the summit of the Öndör Ulaan hill, accessible only on foot, leads to the Tovkhon hermitage, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. Located at 2,312 m altitude, the site reveals a vast panorama over the Khangaï mountain range. You will enjoy a picnic in this exceptional setting, with the Orkhon valley below.

Return to your hosts' place then a stroll around the camp surroundings.

Vallée de l'Orkhon•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades

8 km

Those who wish can set off on a horse ride along the Orkhon Valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls.

For others, it is possible to reach the falls on a hike of approximately 6 km, or by vehicle depending on your preferences.

Visit the Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where clear water cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing at 16 meters high, they were formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

At the end of the day, you attend the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.

On the way to the Gobi Desert!

Monastère d'Ongi•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Orkhon Valley → Ongii monastery

7h30300 km

Transition day between two ecosystems: you leave the green mountains of the Khangai to head towards the Gobi.

Discovery of the site, known as Ong Monastery, as well as the associated small museum. The dwellings and monasteries, once occupied by nearly a thousand monks, were almost entirely destroyed in 1937. Since 2002, a few religious have returned and undertaken the reconstruction of the temples with modest means but profound devotion.

Flaming Cliffs and Dinosaurs

Bayanzag•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Last day on the track before reaching the gates of the Great Gobi and its "Three Beauties", the three highest peaks of this section of the Gobi-Altai range: Baruun Saihan, the Western Beauty; Dund Saihan, the Central Beauty; and Züün Saihan, the Eastern Beauty, which peaks at 2,846 meters.

Visit the Bayanzag cliffs, known as the "flaming cliffs" due to their ochre and red hues, and famous for the "dinosaur cemetery". Surrounded by saxaoul forests, they bear witness to an era when dinosaurs still roamed the region. It was here that paleontologist Roy Andrews Chapman discovered, in 1922, the first dinosaur bones and eggs ever excavated, now visible in the Natural History Museum in Ulan Bator and in several museums around the world.

Arrival in the Khongor Dunes

Dunes de khongor•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Bayanzag → Khavtsgait

1h40 km

Early in the morning, you will head towards Khavtsgait Mountain. After a short transfer, you begin your hike. Climbing Khavtsgait Bagh mountain requires sustained effort, but the view of the desert from the summit is remarkable. You will observe many rock paintings depicting bighorn sheep, horses, camels and human figures in hunting scenes.

Khavtsgait → Khongor els

4h160 km

We then head westward through the park to reach the Khongor sand dunes, or "light bay sand". They extend in a wide belt at the foot of the "Three Beauties", forming one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Gobi desert.

Visit to the Khongor dunes. This long expanse of sand, stretching nearly 180 km long and 20 km wide, features dunes of approximately 80 meters in height, with the highest reaching 120 meters. From their summit, the view opens onto the vastness of the desert, while the shifting sand produces a natural humming sound, at the origin of the name "singing dunes". Beyond the golden crests, the steppe unfolds as far as the eye can see.

You are heading off for a camel trek in the heart of the Gobi Desert. At the leisurely pace of this emblematic animal, you progress along the dunes and the Khongor River, "Clear Bay", which alternates between surface and underground.

On foot, you climb one of the dunes to enjoy a wide panorama over the desert. From the summit, the silhouettes of the Three Beauties stand out on the horizon and, with a bit of luck, you will hear the singing dunes.

Trekking in the canyons

Canyon De Yol•Guide furgonChefGuide francophone

Khongor els → Yolii am

5h20180 km

You take the trail heading East of the "Three Beauties" to reach the canyons region.

Hiking in the Yoliin Am canyon, the canyon of bearded vultures. You walk along the bottom of the canyon, covered with an almost permanent blanket of ice. The place is so narrow that the sun's rays can only melt the ice from August onwards, while it invades the canyon the rest of the year.

After this first hike, you head to the "Mukhart Shivert" canyon. Smaller than Yoliin Am and ending in a dead end, it remains very impressive: you progress along a large trench surrounded by high vertical walls, with a floor covered in smooth and shiny blue ice (outside the height of summer). At the end of the dead end is a frozen waterfall most of the time. The round trip takes approximately one hour.

7h450 km

You travel through one of the emptiest regions of Mongolie. Between rocky desert and semi-arid steppes, you reach the Baga gazariin chuluu rocky formation mountains, where imposing granite formations shaped by the often harsh elements of this area appear.

In the 19th century, two venerated monks lived here, and their inscriptions carved into the rock are still visible. According to legend, Gengis Khan would have stayed in this region, which is pleasant for walking.
