This stunning freshwater lake sits north of the Bor Khyariin Els dune, with a 59km shoreline stretching 14km long and 8.3km wide. From above, it bears an uncanny resemblance to a camel without its legs. While modest in size compared to other Mongolian lakes, Bayan Nuur stands out for its remarkable depth of 40–50m. During winter, the lake's surface freezes solid, with ice reaching 1.1–1.3m thick. Yet in summer, water temperatures hover between 18–21°C.

Numerous springs feed its waters, channelling into the Khungi River. A small forest graces the southern shore between the lake and the Bor Khyariin Els dune. The Temeen Khuzuu, Ulaan Shanaa, and Serven cliffs along the northern shoreline conceal magnificent canyons within their depths.
