Capital and administrative center of Khövsgöl province, the city of Mörön sits 690 km from Ulaanbaatar. Since 2014, a paved road connects the two cities in approximately 10 to 12 hours. Mörön has an airport with daily flights to and from Ulaanbaatar. The flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

The city of Mörön stands at 1,280 meters elevation, in the valley of the Delgermörön River, which originates in the Ulaan Taiga mountains in the far northwest of the province. This valley has been designated a nature reserve since 2003. Mörön boasts a museum offering an excellent overview of local fauna and flora. Traditional, Buddhist, and shamanic costumes are also displayed here.

Mörön is home to a hospital, theater, post office, several schools and kindergartens, as well as one of the country's largest open-air markets.

The current population of Mörön is 36,000 inhabitants.

History

From 1809 to 1811, the Möröngiin Khuree Monastery was founded on the banks of the Delgermörön River. A century later, the monastery expanded, with approximately 1,300 lamas in residence, and the city of Mörön grew around it. The monastery was destroyed in 1937, but the city continued to thrive. A new monastery, Danzadarjaa Khiid, was built west of the city in the 1990s.
