Located in the Khutag-Öndör sum of Bulgan aimag, Uran Uul is an extinct volcano whose crater rises to 1,686 metres, measures 500 metres in diameter and 50 metres in depth.

It is the most beautiful and most renowned volcano in Mongolia. It was active 20 to 25 million years ago. The area is home to abundant and exceptional fauna and flora. The lava that flowed here several thousand years ago created a remarkably fertile environment. A hiking trail winds through the undergrowth among Siberian larches, leading you to the crater. You'll observe a surprising variety of plants, as well as numerous birds and insects, including the Apollo butterfly. You can then venture into the crater's depths, where you'll find a charming small lake at its centre, surrounded by lush vegetation. With its shape, Uran Uul volcano resembles the Puy Pariou, and the Puy de la Vache, located in France's Massif Central. The Mongolian government first established the protected area of Uran Togoo north of Uran Uul (1965), then extended it south of Uran Uul in 1995.

The national park comprises two other extinct volcanoes: Tulga Uul and Javalch Uul.
