Visiting Mongolia is one thing, but riding through it on horseback is quite another. Truth be told, there's no better way to discover the breathtaking landscapes and immerse yourself in the Mongolian way of life than by doing so on horseback. Not to mention the sense of freedom that horseback riding offers! The good news? Even inexperienced riders can experience this timeless adventure…
Why Discover Mongolia on Horseback?
Mongolia is renowned for its many wild horses. And for good reason—most Mongolian nomads use them as their primary means of transport! Discovering Mongolia on horseback means stepping into the shoes of its inhabitants and living their daily life. Thus, each evening, after riding for kilometers during the day, you'll find refuge in yurts to share special moments with local communities.
Beyond nomadic immersion, horseback rides offer a unique way to appreciate the beauty of Mongolia's landscapes. Endless steppes, mountain forests, sand deserts, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain… The Mongolian wilderness captivates all who encounter it! But more importantly, horseback riding offers a significant advantage: it allows you to discover places inaccessible by car, such as crossing rivers or traversing forests!
Mongolia on Horseback for Beginners
Have you little to no horseback riding experience? Don't worry—there are numerous programs tailored for beginners. And if it reassures you, Mongolian horses are very small in size, similar even to ponies. That said, they are extremely enduring horses but very easy to handle. In any case, guides are there to teach and familiarize you with the horses as much as possible. If needed, they can even lead riders on a lunge line who are less comfortable and take charge of children by having them ride on their own horses. You can even take lessons before your departure to test your riding abilities! Either way, the rides are done at a walking pace, but nothing prevents more experienced riders from forming a small group to try trotting or galloping!
Which Circuit to Choose?
As mentioned earlier, you don't need to be an experienced rider to discover Mongolia on horseback. However, it's best to prioritize "discovery" type horseback circuits that take place over a day or a few days. The ideal approach is to seek advice on the different difficulty levels of the circuits offered to find the most suitable one for your profile.
At Horseback Mongolia, we offer several horseback circuits adapted for the most inexperienced riders. Most combine multiple forms of transportation (car, hiking, and horseback riding) to make the most of Mongolia's landscapes while gradually learning to ride, such as our discovery ride circuit. If you're more drawn to the nomadic lifestyle of the Mongolian people, nothing prevents you from combining horseback riding with stays with local families during your trip. One thing is certain—you can personalize and customize your circuit according to your preferences.
