Fetishism is characterized by the belief that objects possess magical powers or are inhabited by spirits, with the external appearance and internal, fundamental characteristics of any object being inevitably linked. Thus the color, scent, texture, or sound of objects or animals express important characteristics. White color, for example, is associated with purity, and this property is attributed to all objects of that color.

In the same way, trees, mountains, and animals with a particular form are considered sacred, their shape being thought to express special (or magical) internal characteristics. The veneration of trees, animals, or unusual geological formations persists to this day. Similarly, the symbolism linked to form and color continues to be respected by traditional Mongols.
