In the heart of the Gobi Desert, the red cliffs of Bayanzag — or Flaming Cliffs — reveal a century of paleontological history bathed in unique light.

The red sand cliffs of Bayanzag, now better known as the "Flaming Cliffs" for their ochre and crimson hues, rise approximately 100 km northwest of Dalanzadgad. Bayanzag means "rich in saxaul" — an acacia-like shrub standing about two meters tall that thrives throughout the surrounding landscape and serves as sustenance for camels.

This expanse features several sedimentary sand cliffs where numerous dinosaur fossils have been unearthed. In 1922, paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews became the first to discover bones and eggs from these ancient reptiles. The remains belonged to a previously unidentified, horned herbivore measuring roughly two meters in length. Following his discovery, it was named Protoceratops andrewsi.

During two seasons of excavation, several hundred skeletal remains were extracted. During this pivotal period, Andrews and his team uncovered a dinosaur nest containing a clutch of eggs—a discovery that captured the world's attention.
