Bayan-Ölgii aimag is located in the far west of Mongoolia. To the north and west, the province shares borders with Russia, and to the southwest with the People's Republic of China.

Nairamdal Peak (4,374 meters) is the highest point in the region and the country, while the Khovd River (516 km), which originates in the Altai Tavan Bogd range, is the longest river in Mongolia.

The province is also home to numerous freshwater lakes, with Tolbo and Dayan being the largest. Bayan-Ölgii aimag is renowned for its mineral springs, including those of Ak-su and Chigertei.

The entire Bayan-Ölgii province is suited to agriculture. Local flora is remarkably diverse. You'll find kobresia, sedge on mountain plateaus, gooseberries, and wild cherries. Ten percent of the province is covered by forests, primarily larch.

Geological surveys have confirmed that the territory contains fossils, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, petroleum, and resources suitable for construction materials.

Wild sheep, ibex, and snow leopards inhabit the heights of the Altai range, while marmots and foxes are found on the lower slopes. Bears, lynx, and squirrels live in the forests.

Eighty percent of the province's population is Kazakh and 17% is Khoton.

In 1998, the province's grain harvest reached 3,000 tons, with 600 tons of fodder and 21,452 tons of potatoes and other vegetables. The province's coal mine produced 404,000 tons of coal and generated revenue of 166.7 million tugriks.
