Many experts and historians believe that the origins of skiing date back to prehistory, when the nomadic peoples of the Altai are thought to have invented it. Skiing was subsequently introduced to the Americas, Central Asian peoples having crossed the Bering Strait during the Ice Age, and to Asia Minor and Northern Europe (Scandinavian countries). Even today, Mongolian ethnic groups such as the Uriankhais continue to use this ancient form of transportation. Here, exclusively, is a video from the film by our friend Hamid Sardar, "The White Reindeer," showcasing the traditional construction of skis and how the Uriankhais use them in contemporary times.
