During your trip to Mongolia, we'll frequently recommend taking at least one domestic flight. The country is vast and overland routes are often extremely challenging. A flight can save you easily 3 or 4 days of driving, time you can instead spend trekking or sharing meaningful moments with herding families.

These flights represent a significant expense, as beyond your ticket price, you must account for your guide's fare and the empty-leg journey your driver makes—often spanning two full days to reach your landing destination or return to Ulaanbaatar. The cost naturally depends on group size, but averages between €180 and €220 per person.

If your budget allows, booking one or more domestic flights will undoubtedly enhance your experience, while travelers with tighter budgets may opt to cover all distances by road (jeep or bus).

Only two airlines currently operate domestic flights in Mongolia: Hunnu Air and Aeromongolia. We primarily work with Hunnu Air, and occasionally with Aeromongolia, particularly for flights to the western regions (Khovd and Ölgii). Both carriers operate Fokker F50 aircraft accommodating up to 50 passengers (plus 4 crew members). The permitted baggage allowance is 10 kg in checked baggage and 5 kg for carry-on. For checked baggage, the airlines are fairly lenient if you exceed the limit by just 1 or 2 kg, though you'll need to pay a surcharge for anything beyond that. The surcharge remains reasonable—between €1.20 and €1.50 per additional kilogram, depending on your destination.
