Khar Lake sits west of the Khangai mountain range at 1,980 meters elevation. It lies 80 km northeast of Erdenekhairkhan sum, in Zavkhan province and 110 km from Uliastai.

This turquoise blue lake presents a striking spectacle. It is indeed surrounded by the Bor Khyar sand dunes that descend almost directly into its waters. The Tüdevteï mountains to the north, the Burkhantolgoï and Burgast ranges to the east, and finally Tovkhosh mountain to the southwest complete the panorama.

Khar Lake reaches depths of 48 meters, extends 30 kilometers in length and 5 to 10 kilometers in width. On the lake's surface, you can spot two islands: Ikh, meaning "large", and Baga, meaning "small" Avkhash. This fish-rich lake will delight anglers, while birdwatching enthusiasts can observe more than 13 endemic species here.
