Mount Otgontenger is the highest peak of the Khangai mountain range. It is located in Zavkhan Province, east of Uliastai. In 1992, the Mongolian government designated a strictly protected zone of 1,055 km² surrounding the summit.

Experts disagree on its exact altitude. While most maps previously indicated 4,021 meters, surveyors now agree on a height of 4,008 meters.

Mount Otgontenger is the only peak in the Khangai range covered by a permanent glacier. The southern face of the mountain features the country's largest granite wall. At the foot of the mountain lies Lake Badarkhundaga.

Mount Otgontenger is one of the three holiest summits in the country, and it is strictly forbidden for women to climb it. According to traditional Mongolian beliefs, wrathful gods inhabit the sacred mountains of Mongolie. Ochirvaani the God is associated with Mount Otgontenger.

In August 2002, a decree from the Ministry of Nature and Environment prohibited climbing the summit due to the progressive diminishment of its eternal snows.
