Zamyn-Üud, meaning "gate on the road", is a sum and the capital of Dornogovi province. The town has a population of around 15,000 inhabitants. Located on the ancient trade route between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar, it now serves as the most significant commercial hub between Mongolie and the People's Republic of China via Erlian. The town sits on the Trans-Mongolian railway line.

The Zamyn-Üud free trade zone, covering 900 hectares, was officially established in 2004. It stretches between the town of Zamyn-Üud and the Chinese border. The region has benefited greatly from the surge in cross-border trade.

Climate

Zamyn-Üud enjoys a desert-type climate, with a very long winter that is bitterly cold and dry, and a short, hot summer. Most precipitation falls during summer months. Snow is possible in May and September.
