Socks manufactured in Mongolia from lesser-known yet high-quality wools – this is what Marc Mellet, creator of "My Mongolian Socks," offers.
Marc Mellet, a devoted lover of Mongolia, launched his Mongolian socks brand in 2018. After 20 years of traveling back and forth between France and Mongolia, he decided to support Mongolian herders and help them better valorize their wool production. Today, the brand embodies a fair trade approach where people and animals hold paramount importance.
A Passion for Mongolia – How It All Began
Marc Mellet has known Mongolia for 20 years. A former renowned photographer and reporter, his travels and assignments have taken him across Mongolia and led to meaningful encounters. Exotic, warm, and captivating, Mongolia cast its spell, and Marc could not resist. Falling in love with the country, he now returns two to three times a year.
While working on an assignment, Mongolian herders shared their struggles and asked for help selling their wool. Skeptical at first, his generosity and love of challenges inspired Marc to embark on the adventure of Mongolian wool. "My Mongolian Socks" was born.
Eco-Responsible Socks
The "My Mongolian Socks" brand is an example of fair trade that highlights Mongolian wools ranked among the world's finest wools for quality, offering softness and warmth.
Yak down, camel down, cashmere and sheep wool used for the socks and other brand products come from a highly respectful approach to animal welfare. By prioritizing quality over quantity, herders preserve their ancestral way of life. Each spring, animals are carefully brushed to collect the down and wool needed for sock production.
For yak down and cashmere, "My Mongolian Socks" partners with herders supported by Avsf (Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders). This French NGO has been supporting herders for over 30 years in better managing their natural resources and limiting overproduction.
Once the wool is collected, Marc Mellet comes into play to assert the quality of the wool and down to the factories that manufacture his socks. His beanies are crafted in small artisanal workshops. No dyes or chemical treatments are added to the products.
Complete Respect for Animals
In Mongolia, humans and animals live together in perfect harmony. From childhood, herders' children grow up alongside animals and care for newborns in spring. The human-animal relationship is built on mutual respect, and animals are raised in complete freedom.
Wool collection is done using very gentle brushing techniques to harvest and sort the down. For sheep, shearing is primarily a way to relieve them and prepare them for summer heat.
