March 30, 2015Since 2014, travelers no longer need a visa for Mongolia. However, those wishing to stay on the territory for between 30 and 60 days will need to obtain a stay extension from the immigration office. Here are the procedures and fees for obtaining this essential permit.

As anyone wishing to stay more than 30 days in Mongolia must register within 7 days at the immigration office, it is advisable to begin the extension process in the first few days after your arrival in the country. That said, we have noticed that immigration has become increasingly lenient with those who apply late, and you should have no issues requesting your stay extension even if you submit your application after the initial deadline.

How do I get to the immigration office?

To obtain your stay extension, you will need to go in person or through a representative to the immigration office, located approximately 1km before Ulaanbaatar's international airport. Expect around 20,000 MNT by taxi to get there (and the same for the return journey), or take bus No. 22 from Ard Kino or Peace Avenue across from the post office. The immigration office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 5:00pm.

What documents do I need to present?

To obtain your stay extension, you must provide:

• A handwritten letter in English or Mongolian explaining why you wish to extend your stay in Mongolia. Nothing too complicated—standard explanations such as wanting to spend more time immersed with nomads to discover their lifestyle, or planning a route through certain regions that will take X days, are more than sufficient
• A passport photo
• Your passport
• Payment for your extension in cash, in tugrugs

So, how much does the stay extension cost?

To extend your stay, you will need to pay:

• 27,000 MNT (approximately €13) for a one-week extension. Note that it is not possible to extend your stay for less than 7 days.
• From the 8th day onward, you will need to pay 3,500 MNT per day. For example, if you wish to stay 42 days in Mongolia, it will cost you: nothing for days 1 to 30, 27,000 MNT for days 31 to 37, and (5 × 3,500 MNT =) 17,500 MNT for days 38 to 42. That's 44,500 MNT (approximately €22) for your 42-day stay.

What are the processing times for my visa extension?

Here's more good news! You will receive your visa extension the same day. You'll need to exercise a bit of patience while you're there, but you won't need to return to the immigration office to collect your passport. Plan for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the number of people ahead of you. We recommend arriving when the office opens—there will be far fewer people than during the day, especially in the afternoon.
