Great news for Mongolian sports! Mongolian judoka Sumiya Dorjsuren (25 years old) has won Mongolia's first medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, currently taking place in Brazil.
Competing in the 57kg category,
Sumiya Dorjsuren successively defeated Dutch competitor
Sanne Verhagen (bronze medalist at the 2014 World Championships)
, Portuguese athlete Telma Monteiro (four-time silver medalist at the World Championships), and notably the celebrated Japanese champion Kaori Matsumoto (reigning Olympic champion and two-time World champion) in under 22 seconds!
This impressive run brought her to the final, where she unfortunately fell short against Brazilian Rafaela Silva on a waza-ari.
With this second-place finish, Sumiya Dorjsuren became Mongolia's first female judoka to win an Olympic medal. An achievement the young athlete will have every reason to celebrate, as she will receive 60 million tugriks for
her silver medal, followed by an allowance of three million tugriks each month, according to a
Mongolian government decree on Olympic medalists. A fine way to promote sport in Mongolie, some might say!
Recall that Mongolie brought home
5 Olympic medals (2 silver, 3 bronze) at the 2012 London Olympics, all in combat sports: judo, boxing, and wrestling. Let's hope this result is surpassed this year, and that this silver medal is the first of a long series!
Final Results :
- Gold: Rafaela Silva (Brazil)
- Silver: Sumiya Dorjsuren (Mongolie)
- Bronze: Telma Monteiro (Portugal)
- Bronze: Kaori Matsumoto (Japan)
