Built in 2002 as a base for exploring Gurvan Saikhan National Park, Three Camel Lodge is regarded as Mongolia's first luxury camp. It sits approximately 100 km north of Dalanzadgad, in the heart of the Gobi Desert.

The camp blends desert isolation with thoughtful comfort. Its architecture draws inspiration from traditional Mongolian Buddhist principles: the main building's roofs were designed by local craftsmen without a single nail. The lodge operates on solar and wind energy, making it one of the region's ecological benchmarks.

It also serves as a coherent exploration base: the Bayanzag Cliffs, famous for their fossil deposits, are accessible from the camp, and the Yoliin Am canyon region lies approximately 3 hours' drive to the south.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is that of an upscale desert camp, defined by the Gobi's open horizon and steppe silence. Evenings are marked by a daily cultural performance—traditional music, dance, or throat singing—offered to guests. The décor blends ger furnishings, Mongolian textiles, and contemporary finishes.

Accommodation

The camp has 40 thoughtfully designed double gers that marry traditional Mongolian codes with modern comfort. Twenty of these are deluxe category and feature a king-size bed and private bathroom. For standard gers, toilets and showers are available in the central building.

Location

The lodge is situated approximately 100 km north of Dalanzadgad, in a pristine desert zone in southern Mongolia. Access is typically via domestic flight to Dalanzadgad followed by road transfer. Its remote setting makes it an ideal base for exploring the Gobi's main sites without lengthy transfers.

When to visit

The Gobi is best visited from late May through early October. June, July, and August offer the most stable conditions for exploring dunes, canyons, and cliffs, with warm days and cool nights. May and September suit travelers seeking fewer crowds and softer light. Winter, extremely harsh in the desert, is not the standard season for this type of stay.

Surroundings

Beyond the Bayanzag Cliffs and Yoliin Am canyons, Gurvan Saikhan National Park offers access to the Khongoryn Els dunes, Bactrian camel herds, and nomadic steppe.
