Khagiin Khar Lake
Khagiin Khar Lake
Glacial lake in the lower Khentii at 1800 m altitude, accessible only by 4x4 and on foot from Gorkhi-Terelj Park. A destination for adventurous travelers.
Khagiin Khar Lake is an isolated glacial lake in the lower Khentii massif in central Mongolia. Formed during the Quaternary glaciation, it stretches at 1800 meters altitude, approximately 50 km northeast of Gorkhi-Terelj Park. Its remote location makes it a destination reserved for travelers equipped for adventure, ready for several days of rough tracks or hiking to reach its shores.
Why visit Khagiin Khar Lake
Khagiin Khar Lake attracts travelers seeking untamed Mongolia, far from standard circuits. Framed by the Khiidiin saridag, Khünkher, Asgat saridag and Khölöriin davaa mountains, it offers a highland landscape alternating between larch forests, alpine meadows and rocky cliffs. The isolation protects the ecosystem: preserved wildlife, clear waters and near-total silence. The site appeals to long-distance hikers, fishing enthusiasts and horse trekkers alike.
What to see and do
The lake and its dimensions
The body of water covers approximately 2 km² and stretches 2.5 km long and 1 km wide, with depths reaching 30 meters. The waters retain a dark hue, hence the name "Khagiin Khar" ("black" in Mongolian). The shorelines, marked little by human activity, are ideal for walking and camping.
The Khöl River and its canyon
The Khöl River springs from the lake, then cuts through a canyon whose walls reach 20 meters in height before emptying into the Khongor River. This rock-carved section is an interesting detour for those extending the excursion downstream.
Fishing and wildlife
The site's remoteness makes fishing particularly rewarding. The waters harbor cold-water fish, and local anglers report numerous catches. The surrounding forests host deer, marmots and mountain birds, observable early in the morning.
Hiking and camping
The approach is often made on foot or horseback from Terelj Park, over several days. Routes cross valleys, passes and nomadic encampments. Camping under tent or portable ger remains the norm, with no permanent accommodation existing in the immediate vicinity.
When to go
The visiting window is narrow. From late June to early September, temperatures allow hiking and high-altitude camping, and tracks remain passable. July and August are the most reliable months, despite occasional rainy spells. By September, nights drop rapidly below freezing and early snows can block access. In winter, the area is inaccessible to travelers not equipped for extreme cold.
How to get there
Khagiin Khar Lake is not served by road. Two approaches are possible from Ulan Bator:
- By 4x4 then on foot or horseback: first reach Gorkhi-Terelj Park, then continue by all-terrain vehicle on increasingly rough tracks before completing the approach on foot or horseback (1 to 2 days depending on where the vehicle stops).
- Full trek from Terelj: multi-day route through the lower Khentii, on foot or horseback, accompanied by a local guide and a cook-muleteer.
A guide familiar with the region is essential: no trail markers, valleys that look alike, rivers to ford.
Practical information
- Required level: good physical fitness, experience with self-sufficient camping useful.
- Equipment: four-season tent, extreme-cold sleeping bag even in summer, rain gear, water filter.
- Connectivity: no mobile network on site, plan a satellite beacon for extended stays.
- Accommodation: camping only, no permanent ger camps.
- Supplies: to be organized before departure from Ulan Bator or Terelj.
What to see in the region
The journey to Khagiin Khar Lake can be combined with other sites in Khentii and around Ulan Bator:
- Binder Monastery, located further east in Khentii province.
- Gunj Temple, near Terelj Park.
- Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the main Buddhist center in Ulan Bator, a useful stop before or after the expedition.
- Khöshöö Tsaidam Turkish memorials, to extend westward.
