The Khongor Dunes, "Khongoriin Els", form the most extensive sand accumulation in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park.

Spanning more than 900 km², they rank among Mongolia's largest sandy expanses. Rising dramatically from the plains, they are undoubtedly among the country's most spectacular formations. Wind sweeps continuously from north to west across the dunes, which can reach dizzying heights—between 100 and 300 meters at their tallest peaks. They stretch for more than 180 km in length, widening to as much as 27 km in places. Local inhabitants call these imposing dunes the "singing dunes" because of the sound the wind makes as it shifts the sand. Beyond the dunes, the steppe extends to the horizon.

The Khongor Dunes possess a particular allure through their striking interplay of colors, with the sand dunes tinged in pale yellow. They are bordered to the north by a lush band of verdant vegetation, defined by a small river: Khongoriin Gol. Fed by underground springs, this modest river flows along the dunes for several kilometers, creating an oasis amid the otherwise arid landscape.

This region is also remarkably rich in fossils and dinosaur remains, as well as mineral deposits.
