The city of Sainshand is the capital of Dornogovi province, located southeast of Ulaanbaatar. It sits within the desert steppes of eastern Gobi, along the Trans-Mongolian Railway line. This strategic position on the railway corridor has fostered steady economic development, and the city, unlike many other provincial capitals, continues to attract a growing population—today numbering approximately 29,000 inhabitants.

Some 30 kilometers south of the city lies the Khamar Buddhist monastery, as well as Shambhala. Sainshand is home to a museum dedicated to Danzanravjaa, a 19th-century literary and monastic figure, and a prominent leader of the Nyingma school (red hat) of Tibetan Buddhism.
